The FX Files – Looking towards Ankara

Today marks the start of the 36th NATO Heads of State and Government summit in Ankara. Leaders are set to gather today, ahead of a gala dinner tonight, speakers include Turkish PM Erdogan and NATO Chief Rutte, against the backdrop of ongoing assurances to increase defence spending. Yet despite ongoing pledges it remains uncertain that US demands for spending to reach 5% of GDP (3.5% on core defence) will be achieved. Yet despite the advancement in military spending the underlying strength of the alliance continues to threatened amidst question marks regarding continued US support for NATO’s aims and goals.
